DANIEL HELPED with the dishes and fed the dogs before he and Wes settled in the living room. Carol was already in bed. “When is your mom’s appointment with the doctor?”

“Tuesday. They’re going to draw some blood tomorrow for a few tests, and then we’ll know if this is a ‘last good days’ sort of thing or if it’s real improvement.” Daniel could hear the hope in Wes’s voice. He leaned against Wes, enjoying his warmth and closeness. Buster jumped up and settled on the other side of him, and Reverend lay pressed next to Wes. “I’ve been thinking that maybe I should see my dad, like you said. We could meet at Miseno’s for dinner or something. It’s a busy place, and if you come too….”

Daniel smiled slightly. “You know I will.” Maybe Wes could finally find some peace. After all these years, he deserved it.

Wes turned on the TV and they watched the Cooking Channel for a little while.

“I think it’s hilarious that neither of us can cook very well and yet we’ll watch others doing it for hours.”

“I like the cookie shows,” Wes whispered as he reached over to turn out one of the lights.

“You just like the sweet stuff,” Daniel commented.

Wes drew closer and kissed him. “That I do,” he agreed. “Mom is asleep, so we don’t have to worry about being interrupted again.”

Wes was so warm, and his breath held a hint of garlic and spices. Daniel liked it and kissed Wes deeper. “Yeah, I know. But maybe we should go upstairs where there’s less of an audience?” Both dogs sat watching them from opposite sides of the sofa.

“Good idea.”

“How about I take the dogs out for a potty? Then I’ll meet you upstairs.” Daniel got the leashes, then took the two dogs out into the warm, sultry evening. It was one of those nights when the air hung close and sweat broke out instantly on his forehead just from walking. Daniel thought he could cut off a piece of the air and chew on it, it was so thick. Bugs sounded all around as the dogs sniffed until they found the right spots before taking care of business.

Once they were done, Daniel brought them back inside and made sure they had water. Then he went upstairs and closed Wes’s bedroom door to give the two of them a little time alone.

The sight that greeted him took Daniel’s breath away. Wes lay on his bed under only a sheet, his chest glistening in the low light. “Damn,” Daniel said softly, his mouth going dry. “You make me forget my own name.” Wes had him completely captivated.

Wes crooked his finger, and Daniel moved forward without thinking. Wes drew him closer like a moth to a flame, and there was no way he could resist.

“Wes, are you sure about this?” Daniel asked, tugging his shirt over his head. Though the two of them had moved forward together, Wes’s initial reticence still worried him. Daniel had to wonder if they were moving too fast.
